<itunes:summary>In this episode, John Federico (twitter: @gadgetboy) and Ken Gellman (twitter: @gellmanken) are joined by Steve Hatch (twitter: @shatch) to discuss: Events: Podcamp NYC is on April 25th and 26th at Brooklyn Polytechnic University. As a result of Daddy Duty, John can't attend this year. Ken will be in Baltimore with his in-laws for Greek Easter and Steve is just a dork. ;) Ken is attending the San Fran Music Tech Summit on the 8th, 9th and 10th. Steve will probably attend Web 2.0 in San Francisco on April 22 - 25. John is planning to attend the Conversational Marketing Summit on June 9th and 10th in NYC. (Congratulations to John Battelle Co. on the close of their recent round of venture financing.) The Podcast Audience grew 40% in one year according to a study by Arbitron-Edison Media. New York passes "The Amazon Tax" which mandates that all ecommerce providers must collect New York State sales tax for items being shipped to the state - a hefty 8.25%. California however, has rejected a similar tax. John is searching for treatment for a new maladay called "Twitter Fatigue." ;) We talk about twitter, twitter tools (FriendFeed, SocialThing, AlertThingy), the types of twitter spam, etc. By the way: how is twitter going to make money? Why is it that twitterific can insert advertising into your twitter stream and generate revenue from it but twitter can't - or just doesn't? Steve points out that Pownce inserts advertising. Ken was introduced to twitter by the CEO of MatchMine, Mike Troiano (twitter: @miketrap) If you have a jailbroken iPhone, check out twinkle - a native twitter client that inserts your location into your twitter posts using the iPhone's location services. The Quest for Yahoo continues, this time with new crusaders: AOL, Google, and now a combined Microsoft-News Corp bid. We remain confused. AOL's Platform A is the top advertising network by reach. Blockbuster to buy Circuit City. Like most people, we wonder WTF they're thinking. Oh yeah, and they're going to offer set top box for streaming video. Again: WTF?

<itunes:summary>In this episode, John Federico, Ken Gellman and Steve Hatch review:

Gigs: Ken started a new gig as the Director of Sales for MatchMine. Congrats, Ken. Events: Ken attended SXSW; Steve, Ken and John attended the Business of APIs Conference; John will be attending Jeff Pulver's Social Media Breakfast The deal closed: Audible is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon. Congrats to all. Steve Jobs says, "No Flash for the iPhone." Adobe would develop it, if they could, but claims they need lower level hooks into the OS and help from Apple to do it. Perhaps as part of Apple's ActiveSync License they'll allow Microsoft's Silverlight instead? Hmmm. Is the iPhone Apple's proverbial Trojan Horse for getting into Enterprises? Google reports that it's seeing growth in mobile internet usage on several platforms - most notably the iPhone. When Android handsets are released, what kind of usage will they see then? Rich Miner, a Google exec, says that Android will outsell the iPhone. Rumors have Apple starting a music subscription service - one that may be subsidized (READ: Free) for iPod and iPhone owners. The CEO of eMusic calls it a "classic anti-trust" case of "tying."

<itunes:summary>In this episode John Federico tries to wrangle Chia-Lin Simmons, Steve Hatch, Ken Gellman into discussing:

Events: Chia-Lin will be speaking at the Spring Von Conference in San Jose in March; Steve will likely attend the Web 2.0 Conference in April Jobs: Jake Shapiro of PRX is looking for Social Media Co-Curators for the BallotVox coverage of Campaign '08. iTunes is now the second biggest U.S. retailer of music, second only to Wal-Mart. Random House will start selling their audiobooks without DRM in mp3 format. What does this mean for Audible and its acquisition by Amazon.com? Apple COO Tim Cook has stated that the iPhone isn't necessarily tied to the current "single carrier" model, as it has been. Steve wonders is Apple will release and unlocked phone of any sort - including CDMA. He also wonders if this statement is a result of Google's strategy for Android. Apple is planning to announce the availability of its SDK and corporate support for Microsoft Exchange groupware systems. Sign me up! (Well, after they add 3G support, too...) Google is rumored to be exploring a purchase of 20% of Yahoo stock in order to put a halt to the acquisition attempt by Microsoft. John Battelle says that everyone is in the media business. We delve into the nuances of Battelle's assertion, the separation of media and commerce and the concepts of engagement and attention. People spend nearly half of their media time online according to a research report by IDC, but only about 10% of media dollars ($21 billion in 2007, according to the IAB) actually flow in that direction. Steve asks, "When will we merge the measurement of online and TV?" John answers, "Never." Of course there are attempts by companies like Nielsen to get a better view on holistic media consumption of panels of people. Steve asks, "Will broadcast media become the modern day version of AM radio, taking a back seat to IP-based media distribution?" Yes. Of course. ;) We push Steve on his downloadable video vs. Blu-Ray prediction. He maintains that the tipping point toward downloadable video will begin in 2 years time. Steve launches into a diatribe on the future of media distribution. John parries by informing the crew that NetFlix - a company that distributes round discs that contain digital media - has raised its outlook for the coming year.

<itunes:summary>In this episode John Federico, Steve Hatch and Ken Gellman discuss:Amazon buys Audible for $300 millionAmazon not only gets publisher relationships, but also Audible's proprietary DRM - that plays on the iPod - and a relationship with iTunes for audiobook content. This will be interesting watch.Steve's very excited about being a part of the Amazon family.John and Ken want to know if Amazon will keep the AudibleListener subscription business intact and use it to promote the Kindle.Microsoft makes an unsolicited bid for Yahoo priced at somewhere near $44 billion dollars.Ken asks, "What problem does this solve for either company?"John wonders how they're going to integrate the two companies duplicative properties.Steve thinks it's a great thing for Google - while Microsoft and Yahoo become distracted trying to figure out how to integrate the two companies, Google will continue to execute on its strategy of world domination.Ken asks, "What will be Microsoft and Yahoo's combined HedgeHog Concept?"If the acquisition happens, is someone going to write The Peanut Butter and Jelly Memo? ;)Our music is Democracy from Alexander Blu.Send us email to comments AT odmcast DOT com or call our comment line and leave a message: 775-860-2263.

Events: Steve may be attending the Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco in April while John is planning to attend Web 2.0 NY on January 31st to see our friend Craig Calder of Yovia speak on the topic of monetizing social media and word of mouth.

Yahoo’s continued troubles. The New York Post (always an accurate barometer of happenings in new media. Ahem…) reports that takeover candidates include AOL, AT&T, CBS, Comcast, Microsoft, Viacom and News Corp. (warning: annoying pop-up ads)

To help save themselves, Yahoo plans to give away DRM-Free MP3 music. It will be ad-supported, of course and will probably reflect a model similar to SpiralFrog, although we’re not so sure how well the model is working for them... Ken would have commented, but he accidentally muted his mic.

Not surprising, digital music sales are up and CD sales are down. The problem? The intensity of growth in digital is not going to supplant the losses in physical retail.

Steve points out that if the music industry were a bit more creative, they could find plenty of additional outlets for packaged music.

Who would - who could - who should - buy the New York Times, should the company be in play? Murdoch? Should the government save it? We think not…

John Battelle thinks that it should be Google.org.

Steve thinks that a Google/New York Times marriage would be too much of a culture shock for the folks at the Times. John thinks not - the NYT has been making numerous investments including its most recent investment in Automattic.

Verizon Wireless announces its first Open Developer Conference, March 19th - 20th

<itunes:summary>In this first episode of 2008, John Federico, Chia-Lin Simmons and Steve Hatch discuss: John attended Jeff Pulver's Social Media Breakfast in New York last week, with Real-Time Social Tagging. Interesting... Chia-Lin is planning to attend the Girl Geeks Dinner in San Francisco Mountain View on January 31st and possibly Lunch 2.0 CES was all about the TV's this year Google and Panasonic have signed a deal that will enable content from Google's services - like YouTube videos and Picasa Photo Albums - to be displayed on Panasonic TV's. There was no mention of the use of Android software in the deal. The Seismic Shift in Online Video: viewers and advertisers are moving online. YouTube traffic is up 8% since the strike began Sony's Clicker (formerly Grouper) has seen a doubling of registered users Chrysler is shifting its advertising budgets to live sports and the Internets - and out of prime time programs. TV writers and producers are going there too: NewTeeVee reports that a group of striking writers who call themselves Virtual Artists are seeking $30 million to produce content for online and digital distribution. Chia-Lin's friend Dylan Otto Krider was nominated as an Amazon Short Story Finalist. Go vote for him here and help him land a book deal with Penguin Publishing. HD-DVD is Dead! And really, so is Blu-Ray thanks to Apple and others. Steve thinks that broadband and online distribution will make the format wars irrelevant. Is he right? Apple has secured downloadable rental rights from all the major movie studios - an uprecendented deal. Did they just sound the death knell for Netflix? Was Netflix's announcement of unlimited online movie viewing an attempt to pre-empt Apple's rental efforts? Engadget has a matrix that helps you determine what you can and cannot do in the Apple movie rental framework based on your hardware and software. Apple also announced the MacBook Air. Chia-Lin nearly drooled on herself while looking at it. John thinks it's an amazing machine but is mildly disappointed in it as he would have preferred a replacement for the 12" Powerbook. Time Warner Cable want to start charging fees based on individual usage for its cable modem customers. Who came up with that bright idea!? We think it will hinder the adoption of new media...which may be what the cable company wants, anyway. Jaman.com will be distributing their content to?TiVo subscribers.
